THE 2026 EVENT GUIDE

Where Will You Be When the Sun Goes Dark?
On August 12, 2026, Portugal will be divided into two zones. Understanding your location is the difference between seeing a "Crescent Sun" and experiencing total darkness.
The path of Totality vs. Partial Eclipse
The area where you are located will make all the difference. In the path of totality, the Moon will completely cover the solar disk for a few moments, creating a rare experience: the sky darkens, the temperature drops, and stars and planets may become visible. Outside this path, the eclipse will be partial. Even so, it will be an impressive phenomenon—but it will require certified eye protection throughout the observation.
Where Will You Be When the Sun Goes Dark?
City Eclipse Type Start Time Max Eclipse What to Expect
Bragança TOTAL 19:30 20:30 Total Darkness. Stars visible.
Porto Partial (99%) 19:34 20:29 Deep silver twilight. Shadows sharpen.
Lisbon Partial (92%) 19:38 20:28 Significant dimming. A "crescent" sun sets.
Faro Partial (88%) 19:41 20:27 Golden bite taken out of the sun.
Ensure you get certified eyewear for yourself, your family, or your group.
Weather Advice
August is typically clear in Portugal, but coastal fog is possible. We recommend heading inland to the Alto Douro or Trás-os-Montes regions for the best probability of clear skies.
